Mini Excavator vs Kanga Loader: Which Do You Need?

The mini excavator and the Kanga mini loader are both compact, powerful machines used for earthmoving and site work. But they're designed for different tasks, and choosing the wrong one can cost you time and money.

A mini excavator (we carry the Kubota U17-3) is a tracked machine with a hydraulic arm and bucket. It digs down — ideal for trenching, footings, stump removal, drainage work, and grading. The Kubota U17-3 has a dig depth of around 2.2 metres and weighs just under 2 tonnes, making it compact enough for suburban blocks.

The Kanga mini loader (DW625 model) is a wheeled machine designed to move material horizontally. Think of it as a small skid-steer — great for shifting soil, mulch, gravel or sand across a site. It's also perfect for working in confined spaces where a standard loader can't fit. With the right attachments, it can also auger holes, spread material or carry pallets.

The key question is: Are you digging down or moving material around? If you're excavating, trenching or removing tree roots, go with the mini excavator. If you're spreading, loading or shifting bulk material across a site, the Kanga loader is the better choice.

Both machines are available for hire from our Loganlea yard. Delivery to site can be arranged. Operating experience is recommended for both — if you're unsure about the controls, give us a call and we'll walk you through the basics before you take the machine.
